Ex-TikTok executive files lawsuit alleging gender and age discrimination

A former executive at TikTok, Katie Puris, has filed a lawsuit against the company, alleging discrimination based on gender and age during her time there.

Puris, who worked in marketing at TikTok starting in 2019, claims she faced unequal treatment as a woman, experienced retaliation for raising concerns about discrimination, and was eventually pushed out of the company in fall 2022.

This complaint was filed in the Southern District Court of New York on Thursday.

Additionally, Puris alleges that TikTok inadequately responded to her report of being sexually harassed at a work event.

While TikTok purportedly informed Puris that she was terminated for “performance reasons,” the company has yet to respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit.

This isn’t the first time TikTok has come under fire for discrimination allegations. In September, two former Black employees filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, accusing the company of racial discrimination and retaliation against Black workers.

Puris had previously lodged a charge of discrimination and retaliation with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in May 2023 before proceeding with the lawsuit last Thursday.

In the lawsuit, Puris claims that senior leaders at TikTok exhibited a preference for hiring younger, less experienced employees and subjected her to disparate treatment because she did not conform to traditional gender norms.

Puris alleges she faced repercussions after voicing concerns about discrimination and workload issues, including receiving negative performance evaluations and having her team downsized.

She also alleges she was sexually harassed by an employee from one of TikTok’s business partners during a work trip in June 2022, and that TikTok took an extended period to respond to her report and remove the offending individual from the TikTok account.

The lawsuit adds to the scrutiny facing TikTok over its ties to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, particularly regarding control over key departments within the organization.

Puris is seeking unspecified financial damages as part of her lawsuit against TikTok.
