Kaduna police officer refuses N1m bribe from Zamfara bandit following hotel arrest

A Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Kaduna has turned down a N1 million bribe offered by a suspected bandit after his arrest at a hotel in Kaduna State.

According to the spokesperson of the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Mansir Hassan, the arrest took place on January 19, 2024.

The police received credible information about the presence of the suspected individual, 28-year-old Bello Muhammad from Zamfara State, at Easyway hotel in Tafa town.

The DPO, leading the operation, apprehended Muhammad and recovered N2,350,000, believed to be proceeds from kidnapping.

Muhammad, during the investigation, admitted to being part of a kidnapping gang operating around the Kagarko forest in Kaduna.

The recovered sum was identified as his share of a ransom, and his mobile phone contained pictures of him wielding an AK47 rifle in a forest.

In an attempt to obstruct the investigation, Muhammad reportedly offered a N1 million bribe to the DPO, who promptly refused.

The police spokesperson, ASP Mansir, stated that the investigation is ongoing, and the suspect is cooperating by providing crucial information.

Commending the Tafa Division’s operatives, the Commissioner of Police for the Kaduna State Command, CP A.D. Ali, urged law enforcement to intensify efforts in reducing crimes in Kaduna State and across Nigeria.
