University graduate commits suicide after failing to secure job despite 500 applications

A 2019 graduate of Masinde Muliro University in Kenya, Vera Omondi, has tragically taken her own life, unable to secure a job five years after completing her studies.

The young lady from Gem constituency was discovered by her mother, Herine Okoth, on Thursday, January 11, 2024, hanging in a bathroom at their home in Umiru village, Nyamninia sub-location, with her academic certificates placed on her bed.

Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo confirmed the incident, revealing that Herine Okoth found her daughter’s lifeless body when she went to wake her up.

The bathroom, adjacent to Vera’s house, revealed the heartbreaking scene of her hanging with a rope around her neck.

Kimaiyo shared that Mrs. Okoth was shocked to find her daughter in such a state.

Vera had applied for over 500 jobs without success, and her mother was still struggling to support her.

Preliminary findings indicate that before going to sleep on January 10, Vera had discussed her unemployment with her mother.

Although no suicide notes were found, all of Vera’s certificates were left neatly on her bed.

The police have moved her body to the Yala sub-county hospital mortuary, pending an autopsy as investigations into the matter begin.

Kimaiyo stated, “We went to the scene and responded to the distress call. We moved the body to the Yala morgue pending postmodern analysis.”
