Spain reinstates face mask rules amid recent surge in COVID and Flu cases

The Spanish government has re-imposed the use of face masks in hospitals and healthcare centers starting today, citing a surge in COVID-19 and flu cases across the country, according to the Health Ministry.

Despite facing opposition from the majority of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions, the new leftist minority coalition government is enforcing this measure.

Health Minister Monica Garcia clarified that the requirement involves wearing masks when entering a health center and removing them upon leaving.

She emphasized the simplicity and importance of the measure, considering it a basic step.

With Spain’s hospitals experiencing increased pressure due to a rise in flu, COVID-19, and other respiratory illnesses, the Health Ministry made the decision to reintroduce mandatory face masks after failing to reach an agreement with regional health authorities.

Regional governments have control over healthcare, but the central government can intervene if deemed necessary.

Six regions, including the Canary Islands, have already implemented mandatory mask measures in various settings.

The Canary Islands, a popular destination for British tourists, recently made mask use compulsory in health centers, pharmacies, and hospitals.

In response to the high incidence rate of 1,501 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, Valencia’s health department also enforced mandatory mask usage in health centers.

The preventive measure is expected to remain in effect until the epidemic peak subsides.
