Adamawa community leaders call for ban on sale of tobacco to curb youth smoking

In Adamawa, traditional, religious, and community leaders have joined forces to advocate for a ban on the open sale of tobacco as a measure to discourage young individuals from smoking.

During a sensitization and awareness event organized by the non-governmental organization, The Eye Opener Youth and Women Foundation, the leaders took turns expressing their concerns.

They highlighted poor parental upbringing as a significant factor contributing to habits like smoking and emphasized the need for decisive actions to curb this trend.

The leaders proposed that government regulation of the distribution and sale of tobacco could significantly reduce the number of youths engaging in smoking.

They believe such measures would play a crucial role in preventing individuals from falling victim to smoking-related health issues, including heart-related diseases.

Umaru Hassan, the coordinator of Pella District for The Eye Opener Youth and Women Foundation, stated that the campaign aims to raise public awareness about the adverse effects of tobacco smoking and the necessity to restrict its cultivation, production, and distribution.

Key figures present at the event included the Village Head of Uding South, Ardo Edison Taya Klakusu, Assistant Village Head Baba Adamu Gwala, as well as other community and religious leaders, retired and serving teachers, and numerous local politicians.

It was noted that the seemingly ineffective fight against public tobacco smoking nationwide has led to a steady increase in the prevalence of the habit.

Particularly in northern Adamawa, especially around or near the borderlines with the Cameroon Republic, including Hong LGA, tobacco smoking and illicit drug dealings are prevalent.
