Carpenter arrested for killing woman after sex to avoid giving her what he promised

Awele Ukpor, has been detained for the alleged murder of a young woman, Joy Onyekachi, whom he met at a restaurant in the Ajangbadi area of Lagos State on November 19, 2023.

Details presented in court on Monday, December 18, revealed that Ukpor encountered Onyekachi at a bar in the vicinity, engaging in a conversation.

During the interaction, Onyekachi disclosed her job loss, and Ukpor offered to take her home and provide N60,000 to kickstart a new venture.

However, after spending the night together, he offered her N20,000, deviating from the initial agreement, leading to an argument.

During the dispute, Ukpor struck her on the head with an iron basin, resulting in her death.

Ukpor subsequently enlisted the assistance of a scrap collector to bury her in a shallow grave behind an abandoned bakery.

Appearing before Magistrate Linda Balogun at a Yaba Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State, Ukpor faced a one-count charge of murder.

The police prosecutor, Chekwube Okeh, requested the court to remand the defendant in the correctional center pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

The charge indicated that Ukpor unlawfully killed Joy Onyekachi by hitting her head with an iron basin, followed by secretly burying the corpse in a shallow grave.

The defendant’s plea was not taken, and upon the prosecutor’s request, the magistrate remanded Ukpor to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre awaiting legal advice from the DPP.

The case was adjourned until January 24, 2023, for DPP advice.
