The National Assembly has announced its aim to achieve a 20 percent contribution from the maritime sector to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2024.
Abdussamad Dasuki, Chairman of the House Committee on Shipping Services, conveyed this goal during a special performance retreat organized by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in Lagos.

The event, themed ‘Strengthening Economic Regulation of the Marine and Blue Economy,’ addressed the current contribution of the sector, which falls below one percent.
Dasuki emphasized the need for a significant shift in the sector’s contribution, assuring that all necessary steps would be taken to achieve this target.
He pledged collaboration with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council to support and regulate the sector effectively.
Dasuki highlighted efforts to expedite the creation of essential legislation governing the agency, ensuring legal backing for its regulatory functions.
Addressing the gathering, Akutah Ukeyima, the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, emphasized the council’s historical role in fostering innovation and progress in global trade.

He described the retreat as a strategic convergence of wisdom, expertise, and foresight, underscoring its significance in shaping a future where the marine and blue economy sector becomes a driver of sustainable development and prosperity.
Ukeyima emphasized the council’s focus on economic regulation as a crucial element for fostering a thriving blue economy, acknowledging the importance of effective governance, equitable practices, and strategic policies.
