Nigeria relies on generators for 40,000MW electricity – FG

The Nigerian Federal Government revealed on Tuesday that the country relies on generators powered by Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) for approximately 40,000 megawatts of electricity.

The disclosure came during the ministerial summit on Integrated National Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan, where challenges to Nigeria’s power sector were discussed.

Despite the government’s electricity reform initiatives over the past 23 years, the goal of providing efficient and consistent electricity to consumers nationwide has not been fully realized.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the need to address the inefficiency and significant reliance on backup generators, proposing the restructuring of the Transmission Company of Nigeria and advocating for collaboration between stakeholders to transform the electricity supply landscape.

Adelabu also urged Pension Fund Administrators and state governments to play a pivotal role in supporting the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry through capital infusion and investment in local distribution infrastructure.
