Jonathan urges politicians to prioritize national interests for development

Former President Goodluck Jonathan emphasized the need for a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, urging politicians to prioritize national interests to facilitate the country’s development.

Speaking at the public presentation of the book “Development as Attitude” by Prof. Osita Ogbu, Jonathan stressed the importance of avoiding an “over-domesticated” government system and ensuring the placement of qualified individuals in key positions.

Jonathan stated, “Our brand of politics must change if we must develop… If we over-domesticate governance and say it must be my cousin or my nephew, then we run a dangerous system.

So, attitude matters most in leadership, particularly political leadership.”

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the significance of qualitative governance over extended tenures.

Obi encouraged leaders to focus on impactful decisions, regardless of the time spent in office, noting that government is a continuum.
