US rejects immediate Gaza ceasefire at UN security council meeting

Deputy US Ambassador Robert Wood stated at a United Nations Security Council meeting that the United States opposes an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.

Wood emphasized the need for a durable peace, asserting that calls for an immediate ceasefire would only sow the seeds for future conflicts, as Hamas lacks the desire for a two-state solution.

The debate on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza intensified after UN Secretary-General António Guterres invoked article 99 of the UN charter, drawing attention to the threat to world security.

Arab and Islamic states have been working to table a resolution urging a ceasefire, especially following the breakdown of the previous truce on December 1.

The resolution also calls for the release of hostages and ensuring humanitarian access.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged a gap in protections for Gaza’s civilians and outlined measures Israel could take to enhance civilian safety, some of which were discussed in a call between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel’s decision to allow inspections of humanitarian convoys at the Kerem Shalom border crossing was welcomed by the UN, potentially increasing aid flow.
