SDP faction stops coalition plans, deems them unpatriotic

A segment of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has disassociated itself from the reported initiative by certain opposition parties to establish a coalition.

This faction conveyed its stance through a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Alpha Mohammed, on Friday.

The statement clarified, “Contrary to reports linking the SDP with other significant opposition parties in Nigeria to form a coalition against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the SDP categorically distances itself from such actions deemed unpatriotic and undemocratic.”

Highlighting the existence of a substantial conspiracy allegedly supported by influential opposition figures and certain private sector entities, Mohammed emphasized the SDP’s firm rejection of such political tactics.

“To dispel any confusion, it is crucial to understand that the mainstream SDP, currently entangled in a legal battle against factions illegitimately recognized by INEC, is dedicated to engaging with President Tinubu’s administration constructively for the next three years.

This commitment excludes participation in any schemes aimed at destabilizing the government or diverting its focus,” he added.

While urging Nigerians to stay vigilant and discerning in the face of potentially damaging propaganda and provocative statements expected from the alleged coalition, Mohammed stated that such tactics are designed to undermine public confidence in the President and the ruling political class.

It’s noteworthy that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, had previously urged opposition parties to unite against the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The announcement of a coalition under the umbrella of the “Coalition of Concerned Political Parties” was made on Thursday by seven opposition parties, including the New Nigeria Peoples Party, SDP, Allied Peoples Movement, Zenith Labour Party, Young Progressives Party, and the PDP.
