Ex police officer convicted in George Floyd murder, stabbed in prison

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of murdering George Floyd, was reportedly stabbed and seriously injured in a federal prison in Arizona on November 24.

The incident occurred at the Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, a medium-security prison facing security lapses and staffing shortages.

An unnamed source disclosed the attack, stating that Chauvin was stabbed at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time.

The Bureau of Prisons confirmed the assault, noting that responding staff contained the situation and administered “life-saving measures” before transporting the unnamed inmate to a hospital for further treatment.

The FBI was notified, and visiting at the facility, housing around 380 inmates, has been suspended.

This marks the second high-profile attack on a federal prisoner in recent months. In July, disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar was stabbed by a fellow inmate at a federal penitentiary in Florida.

The Tucson federal prison had previously experienced a major incident in November 2022 when an inmate attempted to shoot a visitor with a gun, leading to no injuries due to a misfire.

Chauvin, 47, had been transferred to FCI Tucson in August 2022 from a maximum-security Minnesota state prison to concurrently serve a 21-year federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights and a 22½-year state sentence for second-degree murder.

Concerns about Chauvin’s safety had prompted efforts to keep him away from the general population. Despite being primarily held in solitary confinement in Minnesota for his protection, he faced the recent stabbing incident.

The US Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal against his murder conviction last week. Additionally, Chauvin is attempting to overturn his federal guilty plea, claiming new evidence demonstrates he did not cause Floyd’s death.

George Floyd, a Black man, died on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for 9½ minutes outside a convenience store, where Floyd was suspected of using a counterfeit $20 bill.
