Controversial UK interior minister, Suella Braverman, sacked in cabinet reshuffle

British Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the dismissal of controversial Interior Minister Suella Braverman as part of a cabinet reshuffle in preparation for an upcoming general election.

Braverman, known for her outspoken right-wing views, faced increasing criticism for her handling of contentious pro-Palestinian demonstrations and counter-protests in the country.

The move comes as the Conservative Party initiates a major reshuffle of Sunak’s top ministers, marking the first such overhaul since Sunak assumed the role of the country’s leader on October 25, 2022.

The party aims to strengthen the government team to make long-term decisions for a brighter future.

Braverman, who served as home secretary, expressed gratitude for the privilege of the role and hinted at more comments to come.

The reshuffle is expected to reward loyalists and emerging MPs, addressing concerns about the party’s popularity as it approaches the next election.

Throughout her tenure, Braverman stirred controversy with a hardline stance on immigration and involvement in divisive cultural issues.

Her position became increasingly untenable after an unauthorized article accusing the police of bias towards left-wing causes, which was blamed for escalating tensions ahead of protests over Israel’s actions in Gaza.
