Senator Athan Achonu, the governorship candidate for the Labour Party in Imo State, expressed deep concern over what he perceives as an assault on democracy in Nigeria due to the conduct of the election in the state.
Senator Achonu lamented what he claimed to be a disturbingly high incidence of electoral manipulations during the election.

Despite these alleged irregularities, he noted that the general populace was actively resisting any attempts to subvert the will of the people.
Highlighting instances of concern, Achonu remarked, “In various locations, there were instances where INEC staff either refused to sign the result or failed to upload it.
You witnessed what transpired here. Security operatives had to intervene before the results were uploaded.
The machine they initially claimed couldn’t upload suddenly started functioning.”
Achonu also raised issues about the unavailability of result sheets in certain areas, specifically mentioning Aboh Mbaise.
Despite these challenges, the LP candidate confidently asserted that he was winning by a significant margin on the ground.
He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of attempting to manipulate the results and urged INEC to declare the results accurately.

Criticizing the APC government, Achonu stated, “The All Progressives Congress government should be ashamed of themselves.
They have lost the election, and they are trying to change the result.”
In light of the perceived threats to democracy, Achonu called for a thorough review by INEC, emphasizing the need to nullify results in areas where irregularities occurred and to order a rerun for a fair and democratic outcome.
