Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, recounted a harrowing experience in Imo State, alleging that he was brutalized by police operatives who subsequently handed him over to suspected thugs for further assault.
Ajaero shared his traumatic encounter during a world press conference in Abuja, just a day before the scheduled governorship election in Imo State.

Wearing dark shades to conceal his swollen eyes, Ajaero expressed his dismay at the severity of the beating he endured after security agents allegedly gave him over to the thugs.
He emphasized that the extent of the violence was beyond description.
Contrary to the account given by the Imo State Police Command, which stated that Ajaero was taken into protective custody to prevent a mob attack, the NLC president disputed this narrative.
He asserted that the NLC had informed all security agencies about the planned protest beforehand, challenging the alleged reasons behind his assault.
“I can’t explain the beating I received. They tied my hands and dragged me on the floor like a common criminal. I am not even a card-carrying member of any political party as alleged,” Ajaero stated.
The police’s official statement, issued by Imo Police Public Relations Officer ASP Okoye Henry on the Nigerian Police X handle, outlined a different perspective.

It claimed that Ajaero was taken into protective custody at the State Command Headquarters to safeguard him from a potential lynching amid scuffles that erupted during the protest planning.
The statement detailed that the NLC president was given medical attention at the Police Medical Services in Owerri due to injuries sustained during the reported attack.
The Commissioner of Police ensured adequate security cover for Ajaero to proceed with his other scheduled engagements.
