Activist urges Tinubu to invest $150m Abacha loot in Niger Delta development

Niger Delta rights activist, Ozobo Austin, is urging President Bola Tinubu to allocate the $150 million General Sani Abacha loot to essential infrastructure projects in the Niger Delta region.

According to Ozobo, this money constitutes part of the funds derived from Niger Delta oil that was allegedly misappropriated by Abacha.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ozobo emphasized that only the Niger Delta region should benefit from these funds.

He asserted that it would be unjust for the Nigerian government not to earmark the funds for the development of the Niger Delta.

Ozobo contended that any claim suggesting the money belongs to the Nigerian government is flawed, as the funds were reportedly sourced from the sale of crude oil in the Niger Delta.

He argued that during Abacha’s regime, oil revenue was the primary income for Nigeria, and the oil deposits were exclusively derived from the Niger Delta region.

It was reported on Friday that the French government had announced its decision to repatriate the $150 million Abacha loot to Nigeria.

French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, shared this information during her visit to Abuja, stating that she had informed President Tinubu about the impending return of the seized funds.
