NLC and TUC convene ‘Extraordinary’ NEC meeting amid strike tensions

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called for an extraordinary meeting of their National Executive Council to address critical issues.

This announcement was made by Tommy Etim, the National Vice-President of TUC, during an interview on Tuesday.

The primary objectives of the meeting, as explained by Etim, include a review of the strike plans in response to the recent assault on Joe Ajaero, the National President of NLC.

They intend to revisit the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Federal Government and the Organized Labor on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which the labor unions assert has caused significant hardship to the Nigerian populace.

Etim emphasized, “We will be holding an extraordinary NEC meeting any moment from now.

The modalities include the injustice meted upon comrade Ajaero, the planned strike, and the MOU signed with the Federal Government. More details will be revealed after the meeting.”

The labor unions, comprising NLC and TUC, had previously issued a five-day ultimatum, beginning on Friday, in response to the earlier arrest of NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero, by the police in Owerri, Imo State.

Their demands included the reassignment of the state’s commissioner of police and the arrest and prosecution of the government aide allegedly involved in the assault.

They further warned of a nationwide industrial action if their demands were not met within the specified timeframe.

Joe Ajaero’s arrest was linked to the state-wide protest in Imo, and while the police claimed it was for protective reasons, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma accused him of meddling in the state’s political affairs.
