BREAKING: Labour declares nationwide strike starting Tuesday, Nov 14

Organized labor, represented by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has announced a nationwide strike set to commence on November 14, 2023.

This decision was reached following an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The meeting was convened to review the planned strike and address concerns arising from the assault on the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, and to assess the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Federal Government and the labor unions on October 2, 2023.

The latter agreement was related to the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, which the labor organizations argue has inflicted significant hardship on Nigerians.

The labor unions had issued a five-day ultimatum in response to the arrest of Joe Ajaero by the police in Owerri, Imo State, last Wednesday.

They demanded the removal and replacement of the state’s Commissioner of Police and the arrest and prosecution of a government aide allegedly responsible for the assault.

The labor unions had threatened a nationwide industrial strike if their demands were not met within the stipulated five days.

The arrest of Joe Ajaero, initially disputed by the police, was explained as a preventive measure against possible mob attacks.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma accused Ajaero of interference in the state’s political affairs.

The incident drew condemnation from various prominent Nigerians and civil society organizations, including the Labor Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, and human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN).
