The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has reported that five more of its employees have been killed in Gaza over the past 48 hours.
This brings the total number of UN relief agency workers killed in Gaza to 79 since the conflict began. The agency also highlighted the deaths in separate strikes near the Jabalya refugee camp.
In addition to the recent losses, UNRWA had earlier learned of the deaths of two staff members on October 24. These fatalities occurred in the midst of ongoing violence that erupted after Hamas launched attacks on Israel on October 7.
UNRWA’s Chief, Philippe Lazzarini, had previously stated that the number of UN aid workers killed in such a short timeframe represents the highest recorded in any conflict worldwide.
Despite the tragic losses and displacement faced by UNRWA’s dedicated staff, the agency commended their tireless efforts to provide humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
