A disturbing case has emerged in South Africa as a 28-year-old woman, Zanele Mkhonto, admitted to fatally shooting her boyfriend, Happy Thwala, a 45-year-old police officer, while he slept.
The shocking incident occurred on the night of August 2, 2022, in Gedlembane, Pienaar, Mpumalanga, and Mkhonto is now facing premeditated murder charges.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, disclosed that the tragic event unfolded after the couple got into an argument when Zanele’s ex-boyfriend contacted her.

Nyuswa explained, “It is alleged that Thwala became angry, broke down and cried while threatening to shoot and kill Mkhonto.
She managed to calm him down, and he gave her the gun, and they went on to have intercourse.”
During their intimate encounter, Thwala’s behavior became aggressive and physically hurtful, which infuriated Zanele.
However, she kept her emotions in check until after they had finished. Once Thwala had fallen asleep, she silently retrieved the gun and fatally shot him.
The case was taken up by the Hawks Serious Organized Crime Investigation in Nelspruit, who uncovered evidence linking Mkhonto to the murder.
She was subsequently arrested on August 10, 2022, and appeared at the Kanyamazane Magistrates Court, where she was remanded in custody.
