Zimbabwe miners federation president convicted for gold smuggling attempt

Henrietta Rushwaya, the President of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation, has been found guilty of attempting to smuggle 6 kilograms of gold to Dubai.

The incident occurred on October 26, 2020, at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. Security officers at the airport detected suspicious items in her handbag during X-ray screening.

Rushwaya was asked to provide the required export documentation for the gold bars, but she failed to produce the necessary paperwork.

Instead, she presented an invoice from a company named All Japanese Limited, rendering the transportation illegal.

This is not the first time Henrietta Rushwaya has been linked to gold smuggling in Zimbabwe.

A recent Al Jazeera documentary shed light on a billion-dollar gold smuggling operation, in which Rushwaya was reportedly a key player, among others.

Rushwaya is currently in custody, awaiting sentencing scheduled for November 10.
