A teenage woman named Cuane Malaquias allegedly stole a one-day-old baby, Ravi Cunha, from his hospital room while the child’s family was asleep.

Malaquias reportedly used a duffle bag to conceal the newborn and carried him away to her home in the Favela of Morro do Borel, a distance of approximately five miles.

The baby’s mother, Nívea Rabelo, aged 27, had fallen asleep following the birth when she noticed her son’s disappearance at around 2 a.m.

The incident occurred at the Amelia Buarque de Hollanda Municipal Maternity Hospital.

Hospital authorities believe that the 19-year-old Malaquias gained access to the hospital by possibly climbing onto a balcony and infiltrating the third floor.

CCTV footage revealed her movements within the hospital, including her departure through the main entrance without any interference.

It is suspected that the newborn was inside the oversized bag when Malaquias left the hospital.

The child’s grandfather, Davi Cunha, later disclosed that his daughter-in-law had breastfed Ravi, and his wife had changed his diaper before they took a brief nap.

However, upon waking, they discovered that the baby had disappeared from his bassinet.

Following an anonymous tip from a neighbor, the police arrested Malaquias at her home on November 1 at 8:15 a.m. The baby was subsequently returned to the hospital, where he was safely reunited with his relieved parents.
