Gaza faces complete internet and phone shutdown

In Gaza, telecommunications and internet services have suffered another crippling blackout, marking the second such incident in less than a week, according to the Palestinian Telecommunications Company (Paltel).

The agency, in a statement, expressed regret for the complete interruption of communication and internet services, highlighting the challenges faced by the residents in the besieged territory.

Global network monitor Netblocks confirmed the severity of the situation, stating that Gaza is currently experiencing a new internet blackout that heavily impacts Paltel, the major service provider in the region.

For most residents, this blackout translates to a total loss of telecommunications, Netblocks reported.

An AFP journalist based in Gaza verified the loss of communication services and noted that their phone maintained signal due to the use of an international SIM card.

In contrast, only individuals with Israeli or Egyptian phone lines were able to use their mobile devices in the border town of Rafah.

Last week, a similar internet and phone network outage occurred but was eventually restored.

During that incident, the Hamas government accused Israel of orchestrating the shutdown, alleging that it was intended to enable potential atrocities within the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian telecommunications provider Jawwal pointed to Israel’s intensive bombardment of the region as the cause of the blackout.

Gaza has recently been engulfed in intense confrontations between Israeli ground troops and militants as Israel pursues its mission to suppress Hamas following its violent actions in southern communities, which resulted in the deaths of 1,400 individuals, primarily civilians.

In retaliation, Israel has carried out an unrelenting campaign of air and artillery strikes.

According to the health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza, these attacks have led to the deaths of over 8,500 Palestinians, with approximately two-thirds of the casualties being women or children.
