The Federal Government has unveiled ambitious plans to introduce one million Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered vehicles by the year 2027.
The announcement came during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Bank of Industry headquarters in Abuja, with the revelation made by Toyin Subaru, the Special Assistant to the President on Special Duties and Domestic Affairs.
As part of this groundbreaking initiative, Subaru revealed that 11,500 CNG-powered buses are slated to be deployed this week.

This strategic move is aimed at addressing the transportation challenges that have been exacerbated by recent subsidy removal, offering a practical solution to the general public.
The Federal Government has assured that the introduction of CNG buses will lead to a substantial reduction in the price of CNG, bringing it down to N230 per kilogram, thus making it an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative for the citizens.
Subaru stressed the importance of integrating CNG-powered mass transit buses, noting that this would enable Nigerians to save up to two-thirds of their transportation costs. He also underscored the initiative’s role in promoting CNG as a sustainable alternative to conventional petrol-based vehicles.
Subaru explained, “Now, with this CNG plan, we don’t even have to import what we need to operate our vehicles. It is called CNG, and we have the gas here in Nigeria.

So, the idea is just to take the gas and distribute it across Nigeria through various truck stations.
Most vehicles are not CNG-enabled yet, and what we are doing is helping them convert their cars so they can use both petrol and CNG simultaneously.”
He went on to describe the development of an app that would allow users to locate nearby CNG stations.
The expected outcome is that Nigerians will be able to purchase gas for their vehicles at N230 per kilogram, compared to the cost of petrol, which stands at N680 per liter.
