Nigerian celebrity chef, Hilda Bassey, popularly known as Hilda Baci, recently opened up about her challenging family situation in a candid interview with Taymesan on the ‘Tea with Tay’ podcast.

The Guinness World Record holder recounted how she was disowned by her biological father, Effiong Bassey Edem, shedding light on a turbulent period in her life.

Hilda Baci shared the details of her complex relationship with her father, highlighting that he had been a part of their lives during her childhood.

However, their family dynamics took a turn for the worse when a significant argument erupted between her father and mother, leaving a lasting impact on the children.

Reflecting on her experience, Hilda explained, “One of the biggest issues for me was when he disowned me. It wasn’t an immediate abandonment; he had been a presence in our lives to some extent.

But the turning point came when my father and mother had a dispute. At that time, I was in my second semester of my 300-level at the university.”

She vividly recalled a conversation with her father during a significant moment – her university matriculation day.

Hilda had reached out to him, expressing her disappointment about not receiving any food from him.

In response, her father callously retorted, “Who’s your dad?” It was only years later that the weight of his disownment became evident to her.
