Suspected cultists kills UNIBEN final year student

A 500-level student at the University of Benin met a tragic end as he was reportedly shot and killed within the university’s campus, marking a resurgence in the conflict between rival cult groups within the institution.

The violent episode left three other students with varying degrees of injuries, and they were promptly rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

According to a Student Union executive, the incident unfolded in the evening on a Friday, as students were returning to their hostels after completing their examinations.

The attack took place within the Anatomy Department, located in close proximity to the institution’s back gate.

The victim was brutally killed by members of a cult group, and the attack was executed at close range while the students were in their vehicle.

Three additional students suffered gunshot wounds as they attempted to escape from the assailants.

The occurrence understandably incited panic among the university’s students and staff members, who scrambled to secure their safety.

A separate report noted that the conflict between rival groups initially flared up in the Ekiadolor area, a community adjacent to the university, several days ago.

This initial outbreak resulted in the alleged deaths of approximately three individuals and later extended to the Ugbowo campus.

A video of the tragic incident circulated online, displaying a red car bearing bullet holes. In the video, the lifeless body of a man was seen being removed from the vehicle and placed in the back of a pickup van for transportation.

Efforts to obtain a response from the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, proved unfruitful, as she did not respond to two WhatsApp messages.

The State Police Command’s spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, reported that he had not received any information regarding the incident.

He stated, “I am yet to be briefed of such an incident. When I get the brief, I will let you know, but for now, no information is available.”

This tragic event recalls a similar incident that occurred a few months ago when a final-year student at the University of Benin was fatally shot in his room at the Hall 3 hostel by unknown gunmen.
