Armita Garawand, an Iranian teenager, has succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, a full month after she fell into a coma following a controversial incident within Tehran’s metro system.

The news of her passing was reported by media outlets within the Islamic Republic.

Armita Garawand, a 16-year-old student of Kurdish descent residing in Tehran, lost her life just an hour ago after an extensive period of medical treatment and a prolonged 28-day stay in the intensive care unit, according to the Borna news agency, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Youth.

This tragic ordeal began when the young girl fell unconscious while aboard the Tehran metro.

Her initial case was brought to light on October 3 by the Kurdish-focused human rights group, Hengaw, which asserted that she had suffered severe injuries during an incident that occurred on the city’s underground train network.

Authorities, however, have maintained that her condition was the result of a sudden and unexplained drop in blood pressure, categorically denying any claims of physical or verbal altercations between her and fellow passengers.

In stark contrast, several rights organizations have alleged that the teenager sustained critical injuries during a purported assault by members of Iran’s morality police.

This deeply distressing incident occurred just over a year after the tragic death of Mahsa Amini, another young Iranian Kurd.

Mahsa Amini lost her life following her arrest by the morality police, an arrest triggered by an alleged violation of Iran’s stringent dress code for women. Mahsa’s case led to widespread protests throughout the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency, in its report on Saturday, cited medical professionals who stated that Armita Garawand had “experienced a fall resulting in brain damage, followed by ongoing convulsions, a decline in brain oxygen, and cerebral edema after a sudden drop in blood pressure.”

The nation is left in mourning as the circumstances surrounding this incident continue to raise questions and concerns.
