A 13-year-old boy, Derek Rosa from Hialeah, Florida, stands accused of fatally stabbing his mother, Irena Garcia, 39, while his 14-day-old baby sister lay in her crib nearby.
The horrifying incident occurred in the family’s home on Thursday, October 12.
When law enforcement officers responded to the scene, they discovered Garcia lifeless with multiple stab wounds to her neck, while her newborn daughter remained unharmed in close proximity.
This young teenager is now facing a first-degree murder charge as an adult and is currently held at the Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation facility.

During a court appearance, Rosa’s father and grandmother spoke on behalf of the juvenile, as the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office officially filed charges through a grand jury.
In an emotional court session, Rosa’s father asserted that the incident was entirely out of character for his son, describing him as “very humble” and “very peaceful.”
He expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and stated that no one could have anticipated such a horrifying act.
Rosa has been ordered to be detained without bond and has been transferred to the Metro West Detention Center, where he will remain until the judge reviews the defense’s request to return him to juvenile custody.
According to Lt. Eddie Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the Hialeah Police Department, Rosa, an honor student at iMater Charter Middle/High School, called 911 just after 11:30 pm on the night of the incident to report that he had “just murdered his mother.”
A transcript of the dispatch call revealed the dispatcher asking Rosa, “Why did you kill your mom?” with no recorded response from the young boy.
Rosa allegedly mentioned taking pictures of his deceased mother and sending them to friends, inquiring whether this was wrong. He also expressed feelings of extreme sadness and a desire to harm himself.

Law enforcement believes that Rosa waited until his mother had fallen asleep before carrying out the multiple stabbing.
The boy’s actions have left the community stunned, as he had no prior history of mental health issues, and the police had not been called to their home before.
The family home, shared by Rosa, his mother, newborn sister, and stepfather (who was away at the time working as a truck driver), remains the center of an ongoing investigation.
