Ogun university students rally against ongoing rape and hostel insecurity

Students at Tai Solarin University Of Education in Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, took to the streets on Thursday morning in protest of the increasing insecurity plaguing their student communities.

The demonstration comes in the wake of a recent incident where suspected burglars broke into a student hostel, stole valuables, emptied the bank accounts of the victims, and allegedly sexually assaulted four students.

This shocking event sent shockwaves through the student community, leading to a promise by the government to bring the culprits to justice.

Organized by the Students’ Union, the protest, themed ‘Walk Against Insecurity and Rape,’ aimed to draw attention to the deteriorating security situation, raise awareness about the perils of sexual assault, and express solidarity with the victims of the distressing incident.

During the peaceful march, students brandished placards with messages such as ‘Ijagun Needs Security,’ ‘Students’ Lives Matter,’ ‘Don’t Molest Girls,’ ‘Say No To Rape,’ ‘Please Save Us From Rapists,’ ‘Stop Gender Violence,’ and more.

The deteriorating security conditions have left students living in fear, forcing them to sleep and move about in groups as a precaution against potential attacks.

Akinjetan Emmanuel, the President of the Students’ Union, emphasized the leadership’s commitment to creating a secure student community.

He stated, “We are requesting the deployment of security personnel to the University community, and we also appeal for the reactivation of the abandoned police station at Abapawa to enhance safety.”

He added, “We are hopeful that the deputy governor will assist us in achieving the proposals presented to her during the meeting on Tuesday.”

Tofunmi Oranaiye, a student, urged the Ogun State Government to provide robust security for the school community.

She expressed concerns about the recurring incidents of robbery and assault, with previous cases failing to yield significant progress. “We are no longer safe; even in my hostel, we are always vigilant. The nearest police station is at Igbeba, which is far from the school.

There can’t be an emergency; you expect the cops to arrest the situation in a few minutes. The Government really needs to look into this. I am paying house rent, and I can’t even read in peace,” she said.

Another student, Olarenwaju Daniel, called on higher authorities to bolster security measures, both on and off campus.

He recommended closer collaboration with local security personnel, increased patrols, improved surveillance systems, and stricter access control measures.
