Inter Miami’s head coach Tata Martino has expressed doubt about Lionel Messi’s involvement in the remaining 2023 MLS season.
Miami’s hopes of making the playoffs were dashed after a 1-0 defeat to Cincinnati, signaling an end to their campaign.
Messi’s debut MLS season was plagued by injuries, and he only managed to play for 35 minutes off the bench.
He missed four consecutive matches due to a muscle injury sustained during a 4-0 victory against Toronto, which also saw him absent from the US Open Cup final against Houston Dynamo.

As Inter Miami has only two regular-season MLS fixtures left, Coach Martino is cautious about involving Messi to avoid any potential risks.
Messi won’t be participating in the upcoming game against Charlotte, as he recently appeared and scored twice for Argentina in their 2-0 victory over Peru.
Miami’s last match of the season is scheduled against the same opponent in North Carolina this Saturday.
Coach Martino stated, “We will evaluate not only Leo but all players who are with their national teams when they return Thursday, as we are out of the playoffs, and we don’t want to run any risks.”
