Lagos police commissioner removes DPO amid allegations of extortion

The Commissioner of Police for the Lagos State Police Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has issued an immediate order for the removal of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Meiran Police Station.

This decision comes in response to allegations of leadership dereliction and supervisory ineptitude.

The directive follows a complaint lodged by an engineer, Ibrahim Saliu, who accused several officers attached to Meiran Police Station of extorting N200,000 from him.

Saliu stated that he and his brother, Olaiya Murtala, were detained by the officers for failing to provide identification or receipts for iPhones found in Olaiya’s possession.

According to Saliu, the officers, including the DPO of the station, threatened him and his brother with the prospect of imprisonment if they couldn’t produce the receipts for the phones.

“The DPO took the iPhones, removed the warranty stickers, and declared that my brother and I were thieves and armed robbers,” he explained.

Saliu further revealed that they were coerced into making a N200,000 payment in cash for their release, as per the officers’ demand.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed these developments in a statement issued on October 18.

He indicated that CP Idowu Owohunwa’s decision to remove the DPO was a response to the allegations and that the involved officers were identified and currently undergoing orderly room trials at the Command headquarters.
