Man sentenced for murdering father’s girlfriend in South Africa

In a recent verdict from the Kimberley High Court on October 13, 2023, a 25-year-old man, Frans Cornelius Vermeulen, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the tragic murder of Sharifa Brown, aged 27, on a farm in Prieska, Northern Cape, South Africa.

The court issued a 12-year sentence, with four years suspended for five years, finding Vermeulen guilty of strangling and fatally shooting Brown.

The incident unfolded in 2016 when Vermeulen, then 17 years old, engaged in a heated altercation with his father’s girlfriend, resulting in the fatal outcome.

Following the crime, Vermeulen was swiftly arrested and later granted bail. His conviction and sentencing, which took place on October 12, 2023, emphasize the seriousness with which South African authorities treat cases of gender-based violence and femicide.

Major General Nomana Mtukushe commended the investigators, led by Warrant Officer Marshal Bosman, and stressed the necessity of bringing perpetrators of gender-based violence to justice, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to addressing this critical issue
