The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting in-depth research aimed at identifying the root causes of road and building collapses, regardless of whether they involve private or public infrastructure.
Led by Engr Celestine Ezeagu and Builder Nwaigwe Daniel, the Chairman and Secretary of NBRRI, respectively, a team was dispatched to Asaba to investigate a recent building collapse incident.
Their mission in Asaba was to thoroughly examine the factors leading to the building’s collapse and provide comprehensive findings to stakeholders, with the ultimate goal of preventing future occurrences.
Ezeagu emphasized, “We appreciate the state government for granting our team preliminary access and urge them to grant full access to the site for a comprehensive investigation.
Our aim is to prevent future incidents not only on this particular project but also on subsequent projects by offering valuable recommendations.”

He pointed out that the federal Ministry of Works often relies on the research reports provided by NBRRI. Their primary objective is to avert casualties and furnish recommendations to regulatory bodies and the state government.
Regarding the delay in commencing the investigation at the collapsed site, Ezeagu clarified that they have been in communication with the ministry and are awaiting the necessary approvals from the commissioner.
He added, “Our research reports are archived in the national archives, where we have amassed over 50 research reports on collapsed structures.
Once published, these reports are preserved for reference.”
The investigation panel includes other members such as Builder Kingsley Oghoro, Architect Ikenna Onuorah, Arch Okoro Leonard (Coordinator, South East Office), and Engr Chidiebere Amiara.
