Customs seize N1.8 billion worth of cars and contraband

The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone A Ikeja, has reported intercepting a substantial cache of contraband goods with an estimated value of N1.8 billion.

The seized items include imported used cars (tokunbo), bags of foreign parboiled rice, and a range of other prohibited items.

Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, made this announcement during a press presentation held on Friday, where he displayed some of the confiscated items at the Lagos unit.

According to Adeniyi, these seizures were made at different times and locations along the border corridors of the South-Western States.

The contraband items confiscated included 35,100 liters of premium motor spirit, 1,100 liters of diesel, a 40-foot container containing 360 bales of used clothing, another 40-foot container loaded with 150 cartons of ladies’ handbags, 50 bales of underwear, and a 20-foot container filled with unprocessed wood.

The seized goods encompassed 106 cartons of foreign frozen poultry, 55 pieces of used refrigerators, 110 pieces of used compressors, 148 cartons of foreign soap, 121 cartons of expired hair oil, and 25 used vehicles (tokunbo).

In addition to the seizures, the unit managed to generate N73 million in revenue through the implementation of documentary checks and the issuance of demand notices to individuals who had paid less than the required duty.

Adeniyi emphasized the importance of agriculture in Nigeria’s economy, highlighting the Federal Government’s dedication to achieving self-sustaining growth and improving the quality of life for all Nigerians.
