In a press conference held on Thursday, Annett Günther, the German Ambassador to Nigeria, revealed that the trade volumes between Germany and Nigeria soared to €3 billion in 2022.
This impressive figure highlights the robust economic ties between the two nations.
Ambassador Günther provided insights into the composition of this trade relationship. She stated that Germany’s primary exports to Nigeria include machinery, accounting for 28 percent of the total; food products at 20 percent; and chemical products at 19 percent.
In contrast, Nigeria’s primary exports to Germany primarily consist of crude oil, making up a substantial 83 percent share, followed by food products at 12 percent, and other raw materials at four percent.
Furthermore, Ambassador Günther shared significant developments in the cultural and educational exchange between Germany and Nigeria.
Approximately 2,000 Nigerians successfully passed the German language examinations at the Goethe Institute in 2022.
An impressive 4,000 Nigerian students pursued higher education in Germany, further strengthening the academic bonds between the two nations.

The ambassador also shed light on the flourishing business relationships, indicating that a total of 90 German companies are currently operating in Nigeria.
These businesses have generated approximately 17,000 direct employment opportunities and an estimated tenfold more indirect jobs.
Germany’s commitment to development projects in Nigeria is noteworthy, with investments surpassing €600 million across various sectors.
This significant contribution positions Germany as the second-largest donor in Nigeria, alongside a pledge of €620 million to the Economic Community of West African States.
Moreover, Germany’s humanitarian assistance efforts in Nigeria have made a substantial impact. In 2022, Germany allocated €50 million for activities related to protection, food security, health, and shelter.
These initiatives are instrumental in saving lives and addressing critical needs in the region.
