Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine arrested, party confirms

Bobi Wine, Ugandan opposition leader, was apprehended on Thursday upon his arrival in Uganda following a trip abroad, as confirmed by a senior official from his National Unity Platform.

David Lewis Rubongoya, the General Secretary of Wine’s political party, took to social media to report the incident, stating, “Our President (Bobi Wine) was picked up by government agents immediately after touching down at the airport.”

Alongside his post on the platform (formerly known as Twitter), Rubongoya shared a photograph capturing the moment when two individuals appeared to be restraining Wine on the tarmac at Entebbe International Airport.

Wine’s supporters had planned to gather in large numbers to welcome him back to his residence located to the north of the capital, Kampala.

However, law enforcement authorities had previously declared such assemblies as illegal.

This incident comes on the heels of the Ugandan police’s recent announcement of the prohibition of rallies organized by the National Unity Platform throughout the nation, citing concerns related to public order.

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is widely recognized for his vocal criticism of the government led by President Yoweri Museveni.

Over time, he has endured multiple arrests and has been a subject of allegations of human rights violations.

In the 2021 presidential election, Wine made an unsuccessful bid against Museveni, who is currently serving his sixth term in office.
