Newcastle thrash PSG in memorable Champions League homecoming

Newcastle United marked their return to the UEFA Champions League with a triumphant 4-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at St James’ Park.

Goals from Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, and Fabian Schar secured the victory, making it a memorable night for the Magpies in their first home game in Europe’s elite competition in two decades.

Eddie Howe’s team now leads what is considered one of the toughest Champions League groups in this season’s draw. With four points from their first two games, they have one more point than PSG.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan played to a goalless draw in Germany, earning their first point in the group.

This historic clash between the clubs highlighted the sporting rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as a Saudi takeover of Newcastle transformed the club’s fortunes similarly to how Middle Eastern investments have made PSG a dominant force in French football.

PSG manager Luis Enrique had acknowledged Newcastle’s threat before the game, and the Premier League side lived up to expectations.

Despite fielding a star-studded attacking lineup featuring Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Goncalo Ramos, and Randal Kolo Muani, PSG struggled to gain control.

Early in the match, Dembele narrowly missed the target with a well-struck volley from Mbappe’s cross, which could have changed the outcome for the French champions.

However, Newcastle capitalized on PSG’s mistakes, with the opening goal coming in the 17th minute.

A misplaced pass from Marquinhos was intercepted by Bruno Guimaraes, setting up Alexander Isak for a clear shot on goal.

Although Gianluigi Donnarumma made an impressive save to deny Isak, Almiron was there to curl the rebound into the far corner.
