New documentary on Tupac murder reveals audio of arrested suspect

The recent arrest of a former gang leader linked to the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur has reignited interest in the long-standing mystery surrounding his death, nearly three decades later.

Despite the passage of time, the case remains shrouded in uncertainty.

Law enforcement authorities had prior knowledge of the suspect’s involvement, as he had published memoirs and conducted interviews detailing his role in the crime, as pointed out by Mike Dorsey, the director of a documentary on Tupac’s death.

“When ‘Murder Rap’ was released in 2015, all he had was his proffer statement, a recording of which law enforcement could not use against him.

Therefore, something new needed to emerge after ‘Murder Rap’ for them to reopen the case.

That new development came in 2018 when, for some reason, Keffe agreed to be interviewed for the ‘Death Row Chronicles’ series on BET, discussing the case and his alleged involvement in the shooting.

From that point on, they reopened the case, which happened that summer, shortly after meeting with me,” explained Mike Dorsey.

Tupac, a West Coast native, was murdered, and six months later, his East Coast rival, rapper Notorious B.I.G., met the same fate, just before his 25th birthday.

“It might prompt the public to wonder why Tupac’s case is solved, while Biggie’s case remains officially unsolved. That doesn’t make sense.

However, Biggie’s case is likely more complex than Tupac’s. Biggie’s murder was kept much more discreet.

It likely involved fewer individuals who did not openly boast about their involvement, unlike the Crips did after Tupac’s murder,” added Dorsey.

The deaths of both artists have been linked to the rivalry between their music labels, one based in Los Angeles and the other in New York.

However, some music historians argue that this rivalry was amplified for commercial purposes.

“I believe that Biggie was killed in retaliation for Tupac’s murder. In that sense, the cases are connected. It gives you an idea of who the potential suspects might be seeking revenge for Tupac’s murder.

It provides insight into those who likely orchestrated Biggie’s murder. Yet, it remains uncertain if the closure of Tupac’s murder case will help solve Biggie’s case,” explained the director.

Duane Davis, now 60, was present in the car from which the fatal shots were fired at Tupac. Although he did not pull the trigger himself, under American law, his indirect involvement does not exempt him from potential murder charges.
