Obafemi Awolowo university slashes tuition fees, allows two part payment

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced a revision of the tuition fees previously imposed on its students.

The decision to revise the fees comes after students expressed strong opposition to the initial fee hike, leading to legal challenges.

The announcement was made by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, on Monday.

In early September, the University management had introduced a significant increase in tuition fees across all faculties, which was met with resistance from the student body.

According to Olarewaju, the University management held a meeting with the leadership of the Students’ Union on September 25, 2023, to address the ongoing agitation for a reduction in the initial charges.

During the meeting, the Students’ Union leaders insisted on a 50% reduction in the charges, while the University management argued that the new charges were the minimum required to ensure the institution’s efficient operation.

In response, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, announced the following reductions in the initially announced charges:

  1. Humanities Returning Students: Initial sundry charges of N89,200 reduced to N76,000. New students in the Humanities: Initial fees of N151,200 reduced to N131,000.
  2. Sciences and Technology Returning Students: Initial charges of N101,200 reduced to N86,000. New students in the same Faculties: Initial fees of N163,200 reduced to N141,000.
  3. Pharmacy and College of Health Sciences Returning Students: Charges reduced to N109,000 from N128,200. New students in the same Faculties: Initial charges of N190,000 reduced to N164,000.

Olarewaju announced that the University portal was reopened for students to make payments, and the University management had agreed to allow payments in two equal installments.
