In Florida, Johnathan Quiles, a 38-year-old man, has been convicted of first-degree murder, sexual battery, and the murder of his teenage niece’s unborn child.
The Florida jury reached this verdict after approximately one hour of deliberation.
The case revolves around the disappearance of 16-year-old Iyana Sawyer in 2018. While her body was never located, the jury determined that Quiles had killed her, along with her unborn child, in December of that year.
Iyana Sawyer was last seen on December 19, 2018, when she left her high school during her lunch break to visit a junkyard where Quiles was employed.

The police investigation suggested that Quiles murdered the teenager, disposed of her body in a dumpster, and concealed or disposed of it in a landfill.
During the trial, Quiles’ defense argued that the girl might still have been alive. They attempted to prevent prosecutors from using the term “victim” to describe Iyana Sawyer.
After six days of presenting evidence, including testimony from other family members about Quiles’ sexual assault and inappropriate communication with them, the jury reached a guilty verdict.
