Sympathizers teargassed at Lekki tollgate during Mohbad tribute event

On Thursday night, a gathering of supporters and fans paying tribute to the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, reportedly faced teargas dispersal at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State.

The event, organized as a candlelight procession in honor of the late artist, was announced earlier in the week through Mohbad’s official social media handle.

The statement expressed gratitude for the love and support received from fans worldwide, acknowledging events organized by communities to honor and pay respects to the late singer.

During the procession, attendees dressed in white T-shirts gathered to commemorate Mohbad, dancing to his songs as a final farewell and tribute.

However, a video from popular skit maker Oluwadolaz claimed, “We have been dispersed with teargas…” Some reports suggested that teargas canisters were fired by police officers in the state.

In a video shared on actress Iyabo Ojo’s Instagram live, one attendee stated, “I came out for my brother, Mohbad.

This is the cabman that helped me. They fired teargas. These people came from the back. We don’t know them. I don’t even know them. All the police officers were there securing us.”

Another lady explained, “We were sitting in front of the tollgate. We had a lot of police officers there. So, where the teargas came from, we don’t see it.

We just saw the tear gas from the back. No car could move. It was this cab that helped us.”

Meanwhile, a post by popular On-Air Personality Do2dtun on his social media handle clarified, “Honesty over Honesty Nigerians do not listen. WE DO THE MOST.

This procession ended at Muri Okunola Park over 3 hours ago. We ended and all left. Some still went to converge at the Lekki toll gate. It is not a protest. It is a CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION.”

Reports indicate that the candlelight procession began at 5 pm and was organized by the management of the late singer. A tribute concert commenced at 8 pm at Muri Okunola Park.

Efforts to contact the police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as he did not answer calls or respond to text messages.
