Super Eagles drop to 40th place in latest FIFA rankings

In the latest FIFA men’s rankings for June, Nigeria, despite their recent resounding victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, experienced a drop in their position.

The Super Eagles, who were previously ranked 39th in the June rankings, fell to the 40th position, losing three points in the process.

Despite their impressive 6-0 win against Sao Tome and Principe in the AFCON qualifiers, this victory did not yield a positive impact on their ranking.

Despite this drop, Nigeria secured the top spot in Group A of the AFCON qualifiers with an impressive total of 15 points, earning them a place in the upcoming AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

On the continental front, the three-time African champions maintained their position within the top six in Africa.

This is significant as it ensures they will be among the top seeds in the AFCON draw scheduled for later in 2023.

Meanwhile, Morocco continues to hold the title of Africa’s number one nation, occupying the 13th position in the global rankings.

Senegal, despite dropping two places globally to rank 20th, retained their second position in Africa.

Tunisia is the only African country in the top six on the continent to move up in the global rankings, rising from 31st to 29th in the world. Completing the top five in Africa are Algeria (34) and Egypt (35).

On the global stage, Argentina, the World Cup champions, maintain their status as the number one ranked nation, followed by France, Brazil, England, and Belgium.
