Farmer machetes neighbour for allegedly sleeping with his wife

A farmer from Ba’abete Fulani Camp in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oro Umaru, has been brought before the Kwara State Magistrates Court in Ilorin for allegedly attacking his neighbor, Abubakar Sanda, whom he accused of having an affair with his wife.

Oro Umaru was arraigned on Thursday, September 21, on a one-count charge of attempted culpable homicide, which contravenes Section 299 of the penal code laws of Nigeria.

According to the Police First Information Report, the incident was reported by the victim’s brother, Sanda Mohammed.

The charge sheet details the events, stating, “On 08/9/2023 at 2030hrs, Sanda Mohammed reported at Kaiama Police Station that on the same date at about 1200hrs, while his younger brother, Abubakar Sanda, was returning from Kaiama kara market to their house, he was accosted and attacked by Oro Umaru, resulting in the severing of Abubakar Sanda’s right wrist.”

Oro Umaru reportedly confessed to the police during the investigation, revealing that he suspected Abubakar Sanda of having an affair with his wife, Fatima Oro, and that he had caught them on several occasions.

He also alleged that he had reported the affair to his father, Alhaji Hamadu, but no action was taken.

Umaru further confessed that on September 6, 2023, he caught Abubakar Sanda talking to his wife, Fatima, and, upon seeing Umaru approaching, Abubakar Sanda fled.

Umaru admitted that on September 8, 2023, he attacked Abubakar Sanda in his house, resulting in the severe injury to Sanda’s right wrist and forehead.

The court did not take the plea of the accused, and the police prosecutor, Gbenga Ayeni, requested that the suspect be remanded in the Federal Correctional facility pending the conclusion of the investigation.

Magistrate Gbadeyan Kamson granted the request and adjourned the case until October 11, 2023.
