Shots fired near US embassy in Lebanon, no casualties reported

Gunshots were discharged near the heavily fortified United States Embassy in Lebanon, with no reported injuries, according to an embassy representative on Thursday.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:37 PM local time on Wednesday, near the entrance of the U.S. Embassy. In a statement, Embassy spokesperson Jake Nelson stated, “There were no injuries, and our facility is safe. We are in close contact with host country law enforcement authorities.”

The U.S. embassy is situated in Awkar, a northern suburb of the capital city, Beirut.

Local media sources indicated that an unidentified individual armed with a machine gun fired shots at the embassy entrance.

The U.S. embassy previously commemorated the 40th anniversary of the 1983 embassy bombing in Beirut, where a suicide bomber targeted the embassy, resulting in 63 fatalities, including 52 Lebanese and American staff members.
