Court orders rerun election in Banky W’s federal constituency

The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal, convened at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos State, has nullified Thaddeus Atta’s election victory under the Labour Party as the representative for Eti Osa Federal Constituency.

In a late-night judgment issued on Monday, the tribunal deemed the elections inconclusive and instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a supplementary election within 90 days in all polling units where voting did not occur.

This decision came as a result of petitions filed by Nigerian singer and actor Bankole Wellington, also known as Banky W, representing the Peoples Democratic Party, and the All Progressives Congress candidate, Ibrahim Babajide Obanikoro, who challenged the election results.

In the initial election, Atta was declared the winner with 24,075 votes, while Banky W and Obanikoro secured 18,668 and 16,901 votes, respectively.

Ibrahim Obanikoro of the All Progressives Congress expressed his approval of the tribunal’s ruling and commended the judges for adhering to constitutional principles.

He shared the news on his Instagram story, confirming the supplementary election and INEC’s order to withdraw the return certificate and conduct elections in areas where voting was not held on Election Day.

Thaddeus Atta, on his part, clarified on his Instagram account that he was not removed from office.

He stated that the tribunal had merely ordered a re-run, or supplementary election, in the 32 polling units where voting did not take place.

He urged his constituents to remain calm, emphasizing that they would overcome this challenge together.

Banky W also reacted to the development, posting on his verified X handle on Monay night with the message “It is possible. Still.”
