Sacked Spain coach claims ‘unjust’ dismissal

Jorge Vilda, the former coach of Spain’s women’s national team, has expressed his belief that his recent dismissal, which occurred just 16 days after the team’s World Cup victory, was unjust.

Vilda, 42, was removed from his position by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) following the Luis Rubiales scandal, in which the RFEF president was suspended by FIFA for allegedly kissing Spain player Jenni Hermoso without her consent during a medal ceremony in Sydney.

Hermoso’s claims led to over 80 players from the women’s national team going on strike until the RFEF’s leadership was changed.

Vilda, who had previously faced criticism for applauding Rubiales’ controversial speech against “false feminism,” expressed his shock and disappointment at his dismissal, stating that he had given his all to the team and did not believe it was deserved.

Vilda, who had previously received a contract renewal and a salary increase, had faced criticism from players about his training methods and tactics, as well as allegations of excessive control.

Despite these complaints, Rubiales and the federation had previously stood by him.

Montserrat Tome, Vilda’s former assistant, has been appointed as the new coach, marking the first time a woman has led the team.

Dani Carvajal, a defender for the Spanish men’s team, declined to comment on Vilda’s dismissal, stating that such decisions were not up to the players.
