Russian general, Major-General Yuri Afanasevskii, became the target of a failed assassination attempt carried out by Ukraine’s Security Service.
The incident occurred at his home in the occupied Luhansk region, controlled by Moscow-backed separatists.
Afanasevskii was handed a rigged cellphone that exploded upon activation, causing serious shrapnel wounds to his head, neck, and stomach. His 21-year-old son was also injured, requiring the amputation of three fingers.
Ukraine’s Security Services confirmed their involvement in the attempt and acknowledged it was orchestrated by their secret service.

Russia’s Investigative Committee reported that a woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for allegedly providing the explosive-laden cellphone to Afanasevskii.
The female suspect has confessed to her role in the plot, which was allegedly masterminded by Ukraine’s intelligence operatives.
Afanasevskii, a former chairman of the State Customs Committee of the Luhansk People’s Republic, had ties to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) and was accused of acting as a financier for Leonid Pasechnik, the head of the Luhansk People’s Republic.
It was believed that he laundered money to support pro-Russian paramilitary groups in their conflict against Ukrainian forces.
