Abuja faces power outage amid labor strike by electricity workers

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has confirmed that the ongoing strike led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has resulted in a power outage in the state.

In a statement released by AEDC management and posted on X, residents of Abuja were advised to take measures to cope with the power outage until normal electricity supply is restored.

The statement read, “We are aware of the general power outage being experienced across our franchise due to enforcement by NLC of the 2-day warning strike embarked upon by the labour union.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may be experiencing as a result of this, as we continue our engagement with key stakeholders towards minimizing the impact of the strike on our customers.”

It further recommended that residents unplug sensitive electronic devices and appliances from power sources during the outage.

AEDC pledged to provide updates on the strike’s impact on its operations through official social media channels.

The strike, initiated by the NLC, has seen electricity workers, represented by the National Union of Electricity Employees of Nigeria, also participating.

The NLC declared the two-day warning strike due to concerns about the government’s handling of issues such as fuel subsidy removal and alleged worker rights violations in various states.

The organized labour had previously staged nationwide protests in August, citing several reasons for the strike, including alleged police action against the National Union of Road Transport Workers and interference in trade union matters in different states.
