Ukraine alleges Russian drones struck NATO territory in Romania overnight

Ukraine has alleged that one of Russia’s kamikaze drones struck Romanian territory, a NATO and EU member.

According to Ukraine’s state border guard service, during a significant Russian attack near the Izmail port, Russian Shakheds drones crashed and detonated on Romanian soil.

Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko emphasized that this incident underscores the threat posed by Russia’s missile tactics not only to Ukraine’s security but also to neighboring countries, including NATO member states.

Nikolenko shared a photo on Facebook depicting an explosion on the opposite bank of the Danube River, which serves as the boundary between Ukraine’s Odesa region and Romanian territory.

The distance between the two shores is just a few hundred meters in some areas.

Andriy Yermak, the chief of staff for the Ukrainian president, stressed the urgent need to supply Ukraine with modern air defense systems and long-range weapons to counter Russia’s drone and missile capabilities.

He underscored the importance of these additional resources in expediting the liberation of occupied territories.

If Ukraine’s account of the incident is verified, it could mark a significant development in Russia’s ongoing 18-month conflict in Ukraine.

Romania, as a NATO member, possesses the collective defense commitment, which means that an attack on one NATO ally is regarded as an attack on all allies.

This could trigger the mutual defense treaty, potentially leading to broader consequences in the conflict.
