Senate launches inquiry into 10,000 abandoned projects

The Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Dr. ‘Lere Oyewumi, has unveiled an ambitious plan set in motion by the 10th National Assembly to investigate the extensive array of abandoned Federal Government projects spread across the nation.

This revelation came to light during a press interaction that Oyewumi had in Ikire on a Friday, where he represents the Osun West Senatorial District.

He brought to public attention the startling fact that there are in excess of 10,000 projects that were initially allocated funds by the Federal Government but have since languished in abandonment in various regions of the country.

These projects, which have already received approval in the national budget, exist merely as paper documents of progress, for upon physical inspection, they have shown no signs of implementation.

Oyewumi affirmed the commitment of the Senate to utilize their recess period to compile comprehensive information about these forsaken endeavors and subsequently present their findings to the Senate.

He stressed that those culpable for the delays and negligence in completing these projects would not be exonerated from accountability.

In his words, “All over the country, the Senate discovered that there are more than 10,000 abandoned projects…we resolved at the Senate that within these four years, we don’t want to see such abandoned projects again.

Somebody must be responsible, and such a person will not go free. These are parts of the corrections the 10th Senate wants to make.”

Oyewumi delved into the issue of local government autonomy. He emphasized that the National Assembly had played its part by granting these council areas the autonomy to self-govern.

However, he underscored the necessity of scrutinizing the actions of individual states to ensure strict adherence to this legal autonomy granted to local governments.
